Every division of the spec, read the same way

Submittal reads MasterFormat sections from Division 03 to Division 33 and knows what each one usually asks for.

How it works in four steps

  1. 1

    1. Upload the spec

Drop in the full project manual or single sections. Submittal finds every section number and title, then reads its submittal articles. Scanned pages included.

  2. 2

    2. Review the register

One row per required item, with type, paragraph, description, responsible company and reviewer. Merge, split or add rows, then assign them to subcontractors.

  3. 3

    3. Build packages

Group items into packages, attach product data, shop drawings and sample photos, and number them in your project format, such as 087100-002-R1.

  4. 4

    4. Route and stamp

Send packages to the GC reviewer, the architect and consultants. Stamps, comments and resubmittals stay in the history. Reminders go to whoever holds the ball.

One standard submittal log on every job

For the VP of Operations at a general contractor or the principal at a design firm, the value is consistency you can check.

  • One log format on every project, so any project engineer can pick up any job.
  • Every row traced to a spec paragraph, so missed requirements show up at buyout instead of at installation.
  • Required-on-site dates back-calculated from review time and lead time, so long-lead items show up before they hit the schedule.
  • A closeout binder assembled from items that were already approved, with a table of contents.
  • Roles, encryption, audit log and SSO on Business and Enterprise. Read the security overview.

Frequently asked questions

See more answers in the submittal software FAQ.

Does it work with scanned specs?

Yes. Scanned project manuals go through text recognition first, then Submittal reads them like a digital PDF. Each row still links to the page and paragraph it came from, so you can check anything that looks off.

What if the AI misses an item?

Every row shows the paragraph it came from, so you check the register section by section. Add a row in seconds, merge duplicates and split combined items. Nothing is final until your team says so.

Do subcontractors and the architect need a paid seat?

No. External reviewers and subcontractors join your projects at no cost on every plan. Only your internal team counts toward the member limit.

Can I import my current Excel log?

Yes. Import your existing log from Excel or CSV and map the columns once. You keep working on the same items, with packages, review and reminders added.

What counts as an active project?

A project you are working on this billing period. Archived projects stay readable and exportable and do not count toward your limit.

Where is our data stored?

In encrypted storage with a hosting provider in the US. Enterprise adds US data residency in writing, and every plan exports the full log whenever you need it.

Can I cancel?

Yes, at any time in your account settings. Your plan runs to the end of the paid period and does not renew. Payments are final, as described in the refund policy.
